Riding on impressive performance by captain Madan Mohan Mohanty, Vinod Gupta, Arun Patel and Sanjay Satpathy, Orissa crushed host Assam by 117 runs on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at National Sports Council of Assam Ground in Jorhat today. This was Orissa’s fourth win in 60 Ranji Trophy matches they have played so far and third in 19 matches against Assam.
Put into bat by Assam captain Naren Sabhapandit, Orissa made a modest 150 with Mukul Roy Chowdhury (29), Madan Mohan Mohanty (25) and Sanjay Satpathy (25 not out) as the leading scorers. In reply, Assam were bundled out for a paltry 62. Arun Patel and Sanjay Satpathy destroyed the Assam batting line-up, bagging five and four wickets respectively.
Armed with a first-innings lead of 88 runs, Orissa went from strength to strength by declaring their second innings at 140 for seven. Captain Mohanty led the scoring with a half-century, while Vinod Gupta contributed 30. Chasing 229 for victory, Assam were bowled out for 111 in the second innings, making Orissa deserving winners.
Vinod Gupta and Arun Patel capped the Orissa win, capturing six and three wickets respectively. Yashwant Rath and P K Mishra made made first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
